Forging in ancient Russia. Historical roots.

Power over the metal and its further transformation to a highly artistic item was always understood by people as some magical process of unquestionable professionalism. Metal art presupposes some certain mystery, which in ancient times belonged to few people.

Blacksmiths in ancient Russia were always highly estimated by people. That was because forging demanded great imagination and strength. Metal art was considered the most expensive occupation for urban and rural craftsmen. That time forged gifts were the most pricy ones, because there were no machines, no equipment, no stoves, which made the process even more complicated and long-lasting.

During the 10-14 centuries while forging, metal chisel, pliers and files were used. Blacksmiths mainly produced arrows and spears. Then with the passage of time forged nails, horseshoes, clamps, locks, rings, keys, knives and fishing hooks appeared. Over time, forging products started being decorative. The method itself was adopted for transforming ordinary things into real masterpieces, creating expensive gifts and souvenirs. There were different elements of design, and the intricate and complicated patterns added even greater value to the forged items.

During the 14-16th centuries forged crosses appeared, making forging somewhat similar to the work of the jeweler.

Then in the Middle Ages period forging was finally considered a technology of producing jewelry. Its examples were ancient bracelets, rings, necklaces and rings. Nevertheless forged horseshoes and rivets were also made in big quantity.
